WHY COX® TECHNIC INSTEAD OF "TRADITIONAL" CHIROPRACTIC?

  • More published research...
  • Tom Bergmann, DC, editor of Chiropractic Technique, wrote that of adjustive techniques utilizing manual forces on short and/or long levers "only Cox® flexion-distraction technique...has been described in a reviewed text and a number of well-respected, peer-reviewed journals."
  • The 2001 article by Robert Cooperstein et al in the Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics reports that Cox® Technic is the second most studied chiropractic adjustive procedures is distraction. Click here to see details.
  • One of only two "established" chiropractic techniques ...
  • The Mercy Center Consensus Conference on Chiropractic Practice determined that "flexion-distraction is a standard, widely taught procedure. There is a great deal of supportable and reasonable mechanical and physiologic rationale in the literature for the appropriate use of these procedures for the care of patients with neuro-musculoskeletal problems." This is rated as an "Established" technique, one of only two techniques in chiropractic with this rating.
  • One of the three techniques used and accepted by more than 50% of chiropractic physicians...
  • The 2000 National Board of Chiropractic Examiners report that Cox® Distraction Manipulation is the third most popular technique in chiropractic with 58% of chiropractors reporting that they use this technique.

WHY COX® TECHNIC INSTEAD OF MEDICAL CARE?

Five federal grants have been awarded to researchers studying flexion-distraction (the term coined by Dr. Cox in the early 1970's to describe this technic) since the inception of the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) "Chiropractic Demonstration Projects" program started in 1994. Each granting year, this technique and/or its procedures has received funds to do research.

The Low Back Pain Comparison Study: Medical Care vs Chiropractic Flexion Distraction

Study #2--2 R18 AH10001-04--was awarded to do a comparison study of flexion distraction and medical conservative care in the form of physical therapy. Findings from this study were presented at the International Society for the Study of the Lumbar Spine conference in June 2004 in Singapore. Results show that for chronic/severe, chronic/acute and RADICULOPATHY PATIENTS (extremity pain, sciatica, leg pain), flexion distraction did significantly better than physical therapy. Physical therapy fared better for chronic/recurrent back pain. Collaborators were the National University of Health Sciences Research Department and the Loyola University Stritch School of Medicine (Chicago).
